About Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier
Billed as the longest fishing pier in the world, the Skyway Piers are the repurposed approach spans of the original 1954 Sunshine Skyway Bridge, left standing after the current cable-stayed bridge opened in 1987. The north pier (Pinellas County side) and south pier (Manatee County side) together stretch nearly 4 miles combined, and anglers can drive their vehicles right up to their fishing spot.
As of late 2025, roughly 0.6 miles of the south pier was closed indefinitely after an FDOT structural inspection found age-related deterioration — the north pier remains fully open. In early 2026, the state announced it will build a new pier on the Manatee County side and extend the life of the Pinellas side by 20 years, following additional damage from Hurricane Milton.
Entry is $4 per vehicle plus $4 per angler (which covers a 24-hour fishing licence in lieu of a state permit), and the pier is open 24 hours. Regulars catch snook, tarpon, grouper, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper, and pompano — the deep water close to shore is what makes this spot legendary among land-based anglers.
